Stockholm-based Valtýr Daregard was born in Reykjavik, Iceland and is an autodidactic, multidisciplinary artist who has exhibited in group exhibitions in such cities as Milan, New York, and Paris. Now he is holding his first solo exhibition as the next artist in Fotografiska Stockholm’s Emerging Artist series.

inspired by the closeness of nature

“This exhibition reflects my personal journey through the constant motion of time. These works emerged from moments of stillness and emotional introspection, inspired by the closeness of nature and remoteness of places where the senses are more receptive for inner thoughts,” says Valtýr Daregard.

Many of the works were created in Iceland and on Gotland, always marked by the artist’s fascination for the calmness of untouched nature combined with the complexity of human emotions.

“My hope is that visitors moving through the exhibition will feel the same sense of presence in the moment as I do when creating the works and be able to discover the timeless dimension that the works represent. That they take away a deeper consideration of the nature of time and a greater openness for their own inner thoughts.

With the Emerging Artist initiative, Fotografiska wants to provide a platform for young, up-and-coming photographers based in Sweden who use a unique visual language to express their everyday lives. Since spring 2023, Fotografiska has dedicated an exhibition hall to Emerging Artists with the aim of creating a more local and inspiring art scene with the community. The exhibition Point in Time will be ongoing from August 24 to November 4, 2024.
