The Fotografiska exhibit The Immeasurable, by filmmaker and photographer Nils Petter Löfstedt, opens on August 28. Using photographs, video, and personal stories, the exhibit portrays some of society’s major professions: people who work with taking care of other people.

Getting 15 children to fall asleep at the same time at a preschool. Trying to save minutes by using an elevator between visiting clients for home care. Being with someone in life’s most vulnerable moments while still being expected to hurry on to the next appointment. These moments are highlighted in The Immeasurable. From his three decades of photography, Nils Petter Löfstedt uses this exhibition to show some of the most beautiful work he knows: caring for others.

The Invisible Everyday of Care Work

The exhibition The Immeasurable is a continuation of Nils Petter Löfstedt’s acclaimed 2024 documentary film of the same name, where he followed Swedish care staff for several years: at memory care facilities, in home care services, personal assistants for persons with disabilities, and in preschools. These are some of our most common workplaces and where most workdays happen. Using photographs and stories from their daily work, Löfstedt asks questions about who we are as people, the role of society, about our lives and our worth.

“Every time I pick up and work with these images, I have so many feelings: rage and grief but also equal portions of pride and joy. It is as if someone is carrying me. The individuals who made the film together with us and those who saw the film at the cinema and shared their experiences. They have all changed me,” says Nils Petter Löfstedt.

The over 40 photographic works, videos and text create an emotional and relational experience in Fotografiska’s exhibition hall. Nils Petter began photographing care work long before work on the film began, and the exhibition shows many photographs and video clips previously never shown before. The Immeasurable has had a major impression on a large audience in Sweden. It was also shown in the Swedish parliament, Riksdag, when 600 testimonials from care workers were delivered to Sweden’s members of parliament.

“This is an exhibition that feels particularly timely ahead of this autumn’s elections, where questions about care, responsibility, and human value will be crucial for determining the kind of society we want to be. It feels particularly relevant for us at Fotografiska to use the language of art to highlight what otherwise risks going unseen: the people and the work that sustains everyone.” Nils Petter’s strong visual language creates a space for contemplation, empathy, and discussions and reminds us that what is most important cannot always be measured. The exhibit presents videos and photographs that expand on the narrative of his film while having its own visual emphasis,” says Mohamed Mire, exhibition producer at Fotografiska.

About Nils Petter Löfstedt

Nils Petter Löfstedt’s artistry often revolves around class, work, workplaces, and comradery, and he describes his work with The Immeasurable as “coming home”. The Immeasurable (2024) is Nils Petter Löfstedt’s third feature film and took more than five years to complete. He was already exploring the central themes of work and class in his Guldbagge nominated debut film Himlens mörkrum (2017). This is also a film about photography and about what documentary images tell us. The Immeasurable, on exhibit at Fotografiska Stockholm from August 28, 2026 to February 7, 2027, includes both video works and still images.
