A Swedish Cowboy: Pop-up installation
Cultural heritage becomes art at Fotografiska
Horse racing as popular culture
For four days, from 27 to 30 September, you can experience the pop-up installation ‘A Swedish Cowboy’. Here, horse racing is portrayed through a popular culture lens, focusing on the emotions, memories and moments that have united Swedes for a decade – a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Swedish horse racing.
“There has been a global cowboy fever in recent years. Country music has enjoyed a real upswing – not least thanks to Beyoncé’s entry into the genre – and successful series such as Yellowstone have contributed to cowboy hats, horse motifs and boots now adorning every other fashion icon. By highlighting our own Swedish equivalent, trotting, we are turning our gaze to the present and exploring it through the sport's unique culture and expression," says Katinka Hollenberg, Director of Partnerships at Fotografiska.
About ‘A Swedish Cowboy’
From 27 to 30 September, visitors can follow the journey of harness racing through a century, from the first competitions between farmers on frozen lakes to today’s popular movement filled with drama, idols and unexpected stories.
In a collaboration between Svensk Travsport, AB Trav & Galopp and Fotografiska Stockholm, the sport is portrayed through a popular cultural lens, where historical moments and unique archive images are intertwined with contemporary interpretations. The result is a multifaceted installation, from then to now, where community, emotions and tradition are the focus in a story about Sweden.
